Suna East Member of Parliament, Junet Mohamed, has accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta, his brother Muhoho Kenyatta, and aide Patrick Mburu of mismanaging funds intended for election agents during the 2022 General Election.
In a statement released on Saturday, Junet claimed the money, which was meant to pay agents supporting ODM presidential candidate Raila Odinga, never reached its intended recipients, calling the episode “a long con game.”
He challenged the Kenyattas and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna to publicly deny his allegations.
“The answer is simple, clear and verifiable: Former President Uhuru Kenyatta released the funds meant for election agents to his blood brother, Muhoho Kenyatta,” Junet said.
He claimed that Muhoho Kenyatta appointed Patrick Mburu to manage the recruitment and payment of agents.
“Mr. Mburu presented himself as an IT expert, claiming he had the capacity to detect and prevent any manipulation of results by the IEBC. To date, Mr. Mburu remains an aide of Uhuru Kenyatta. Just this past weekend, Mburu traveled to Nigeria in the company of Uhuru Kenyatta and Kalonzo Musyoka—clear evidence that he is not a peripheral figure in these matters,” he said.
Junet further alleged that Muhoho Kenyatta’s office in Westlands as highly restricted, noting that even Raila Odinga, the party’s presidential candidate, could not access it freely.
“It is from this office — out of bounds for nearly all of us — that they claimed to handle the agents payments and other logistics. These are facts, not conjecture. I challenge Uhuru Kenyatta and Muhoho Kenyatta to publicly deny these facts,” he said.
He insisted that the mismanagement of funds meant that ODM did not have agents in key regions. “The fact is once they took charge, they never procured any agents for Hon. Raila Odinga, not in Mt. Kenya and not in Luo Nyanza. It was a long con game,” Junet claimed.
He defended his loyalty to Raila Odinga, saying, “Hon. Raila Odinga would have had no reason whatsoever to appoint me as the Leader of Minority in the National Assembly if I had truly betrayed him. For years, I handled all the delicate assignments from our late dear Party Leader with fidelity and diligence.”
The controversy comes after ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, speaking at the burial service of Alice Wangari Gakuya, mother of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, accused Junet of misappropriating the funds.
“I must give thanks… you know, many people have forgotten Mount Kenya, but for the first time, Raila Amollo Odinga received more than one million votes here. And that is why you saw me thanking Uhuru Kenyatta… because he helped us. He pushed us forward; he supported us. Others misused Uhuru Kenyatta’s money completely. As far as I know, as Secretary General, much of the money we used for the campaign came from Uhuru Kenyatta; he supported us both financially and materially,” he said.
The Nairobi Senator accused Junet of hypocrisy, alleging he took and misused Kenyatta’s money during the 2022 election and said an audit would expose everyone’s roles.
“But now there is one rogue individual who has suddenly decided that Uhuru Kenyatta’s money is bad. I want to ask Junet: Junet, on which day did Uhuru’s money become bad? On that very day, you were taking that money… and you didn’t even bring it all to the party; some you consumed yourself with your ladies. On the day we start auditing the 2022 election, it is good that you have started this debate so that everyone can speak about the work they did,” he added.
Sifuna also rejected claims that he could face discipline or expulsion from the party, emphasizing that ODM’s stance remains firm: Raila Odinga never endorsed President William Ruto for re-election in 2027.
“No one has the power to expel me from the ODM party. Within ODM, we believe in what Baba (Raila) told us. Baba never told us to support William Ruto in 2027, never! And because people have been misrepresenting the things Baba told us, this year even I want to say the things Baba told me. Baba told me: Kasongo (Ruto) 2027, home!” he said.
